The Governing Council of the Magna Charta Observatory has granted our university the right to sign the Magna Charta Universitatum. The invitation to the Rector of Shumen University Prof. Natalia Vitanova to sign the Magna Charta was sent by Prof. Patrick Dean, President of the Board of Directors of the Magna Charta Observatory on 28th May.
By signing MCU 2020 our university becomes part of a global community of almost 1000 universities from all over the world, committed to the principles enshrined in this important document.
The Magna Charta of Universities is a declaration of the core values that define universities around the world – academic freedom, institutional autonomy, research, internationalization, equality and service to society. These principles are extremely relevant in the context of contemporary global challenges.

The University joins a respected network of institutions collaborating to improve higher education worldwide and gains access to joint initiatives, research collaboration, conferences, webinars and student competitions designed to support and promote the shared principles of the Magna Charta of Universities.
The official signing of the Magna Charta will take place at a special ceremony, part of a conference dedicated to the anniversary of the signing of the Magna Charta, which will be held at King’s College London from 11 to 13 November 2025.
